What is the local authority doing to ensure an adequately educated and skilled workforce in order to meet present and future challenges?

The local authority and its partners recognise the importance of an adequately educated and skilled workforce in order to meet present and future challenges.

Latest available figures published in 2000 show that 43.2% of pupils obtained 5 or more A-C grade GCSEs compared with 41.7% in the previous year. School leaver destination data for 1999 shows that 65% of school leavers remained in education, an increase on the previous year.

The education service in Wakefield supports over 49,000 pupils and students in full time attendance at the Authority’s 162 schools. In addition, the District has several independent fee paying schools.

Further information on education provision and local schools in the area can be found in the Education and Training section at Wakefield on the Web at www.wakefield.gov.uk
