Where are these people employed?

The local economy has undergone major restructuring over the past twenty years with the decline of coal mining and other traditional industries.

Despite this decline, other sectors have experienced significant growth, most notably in the service sector.

Manufacturing and distribution sectors presently provide a larger proportion of employment in the District than the national average, though the local economy benefits from a good balance of industrial and administrative sectors. the figures below show a breakdown of the number of employees by broad industrial groups in the Wakefield District with comparable national data.
