Road Links

The
M1 runs through the west of the District providing direct access to Leeds in 10 minutes and London in 3 hours.

The
M62 transpennine motorway links Wakefield directly to the Humber Ports on the East Coast and the Port of Liverpool in the North West.

The
A1 runs through the east of the District and provides a direct route to Newcastle, the North East and Scotland.

The
A1/M1 link road completed in 1999 connects the M62 and the M1 at Lofthouse just north of Wakefield with the A1 and A64 to the east of Leeds.

Public Transport

The Wakefield District benefits from an excellent integrated local bus network with extensive bus services operating to all destinations throughout the District and to Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and Doncaster.

Rail Links (Passenger Travel)

Wakefield Westgate Station lies on the electrified extension of the high speed East Coast Mainline between Leeds and London. Regular services operate to the capital each day which can be reached in less than 2 hours.Extensive local commuter services to locations within the Wakefield District and the Yorkshire and Humber region operate through several train operators including Regional Railways and Northern Spirit.

Direct services to
Manchester Airport operate from nearby stations including Leeds Sheffield and Doncaster. All can be reached via connecting services from Wakefield.

Rail Links (Freight)

Wakefield Europort incorporates an inter modal railfreight terminal (in operation since January 1996) and a 142 ha freight village all on one strategic site adjacent to junction 31 of the M62. The terminal provides a daily direct import/export service between Wakefield and the principal markets on the European mainland via the Channel Tunnel.

Air Links

There are currently five airports within easy reach of Wakefield - Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, East Midlands, Humberside and Sheffield City Airport.

Manchester International Airport is the UK’s third largest airport serving over 140 international destinations with over 100 international and 100 domestic scheduled services operating daily. Located approx. 93 km from Wakefield, the airport can be reached in just 1 hour by road.

Leeds/Bradford Airport operates short and medium haul flights to UK and European destinations. Extensive development work is ongoing and passenger numbers have doubled in the last six years to 1.4.m (1999). Leeds/Bradford is located approximately 32 km from Wakefield and can be reached within 45 minutes by road.

East Midlands is the fourth largest air cargo carrier in the UK. Passenger facilities have been upgraded with world-wide connections available. This airport is located approximately 115 km from Wakefield with a journey time by road of 1hour 30 minutes.

Humberside Airport celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1999 and since June 1999 operates under the new ownership of Manchester Airport. Located a short distance from junction 5 of the M180, Humberside Airport is 93 km and 1 hours drive time from Wakefield.

Sheffield City Airport is the newest airport within the Yorkshire and Humber region and the first provincial airport to open in 50 years. The airport handles internal flights within the UK and to European destinations. Wakefield is within 40 km of the airport and can be reached in around 35 minutes.
